Choosing the Right City for You

Two women wearing kimonos, walking through a street in Kyoto, Japan.

Kyoto

Take a journey to Kyoto, the country’s spiritual and cultural heart. Learn about the belief systems of Shinto and Buddhism, Japan’s two main religions. See how art was used to instill faith: explore Shinto’s myths and legends on a visit to the Fushimi Inari Shrine dedicated to Inari, God of Rice; stay at Koyasan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and center of Shingon Buddhism and experience a traditional monk meal; tour the Okunoin cemetery and learn the practice of Zen on an introduction to meditation. Kyoto is famous for its preservation of Japanese traditional arts including the time-honored geisha dance, Buddhist temples, gardens, shrines and for its preserved historic districts. It is also a modern city with an international population and home to over twenty universities.

See How It Works

I would recommend this program to other prospective students. It was well organized with excellent accommodations and wonderful faculty. A once in a lifetime experience!

This program was excellent! AIFS was one of the best experiences of my life.

This program opened my eyes to a culture and society I knew very little about. I made great friends and had a fabulous time during the process. I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
