Academics

AIFS Abroad offers a unique global educational experience for students on this program, with the following academic options available:

Traditional Academic Program only. This program is offered through the AIFS London Global Education Center. You will study in Kensington, one of the most picturesque and safest areas of central London. Within walking distance of half a dozen museums and three Royal parks, Kensington provides easy access to shopping, sports and entertainment. Running, horseback riding and boating are available in Hyde Park.

Shakespeare’s Globe Program only. The reconstructed Globe Theatre, located on Bankside by the River Thames, is an internationally renowned, thriving entertainment center, attracting hundreds of thousands of people annually to its theater, exhibition, restaurant, bar and meeting spaces. In addition to those attending the excellent performances for which the Globe is renowned, the facilities are a resource for students, teachers and academics from all over the world who take part in the educational programs the Globe offers to increase understanding of Shakespeare’s work.

Academic credit for the London program is awarded by Fairfield University. Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university founded in

1942 in Fairfield, Connecticut, well known for their commitment to international education. Fairfield is a fully accredited university and member of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

In 2020 Fairfield and AIFS partnered to develop a school of record relationship that will allow academic credit to be available for both Fairfield and non-Fairfield students.

Course syllabi and faculty credentials are reviewed and approved by Fairfield University.

The summer school is divided into two sessions of four weeks each. Students take one or two 3-credit courses per session for a maximum of 6 credits. Courses on each session are divided into two streams with students able to select one course from each stream.

Most courses utilize field trips and on-site teaching to support classroom lectures. You will need to budget for incidental costs in connection with these field trips, even if the course description does not specify an amount for expenses. Similarly, additional costs for art materials, photographic supplies or theater tickets are not included in the program fee.

This three-week Globe program will give students a wonderful opportunity to study on-site at the Globe Theatre, learning from professional theater practitioners including actors, directors, designers and musicians. Lectures and seminars will be supplemented by movement and voice workshops, scene rehearsals, question and answer sessions with Company members, clothing and music demonstrations and combat workshops. The program will focus on the material and cultural contexts for early modern drama and theater and on the history and process of construction of both the original and the reconstructed Globe Theatres. Students will be required to develop critical responses to theatrical performances and to perform in a short Shakespeare scene in order to examine and fully appreciate the relationship between dramatic language, physicality and theater space.

AIFS in London Resident Director, Summer Program

Dr Elizabeth Wesner headshot.

Dr Elizabeth Wesner

For over ten years I have been working in international education, across the US, UK and Asia. I have been lucky enough to live in Tianjin, Hong Kong and Liverpool but I look forward to welcoming you to my capital city, London. I was brought up in a small rural town in Central Virginia before leaving to study Education at the University of Virginia. During my college years, I spent the summer months working and studying with foreign students in China and South Korea. These experiences were life-changing, leading to my career in international education. Only one out of every ten American students studies abroad, so simply being on this program makes you stand out from the crowd. My team and I will make sure you make the most of your study abroad opportunity and look forward to welcoming you to London.

The Resident Director provides academic advice, introduces you to the community and handles communication with the University.

Learning does not begin or end in the classroom. To help you get a true taste of British life and culture, the AIFS staff organize an active social and cultural program.

A guided city tour is included in the program fee – see Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London.

Shakespeare’s Globe program

To help you get a true taste of theater life, extracurricular activities have been arranged specifically for students on this program to enable you to become fully immersed in the life and work of the Globe. Activities include:

Theater performances: Attend 3 performances at the Globe and experience Shakespeare’s work just as theater-goers did in the 1600s.
All programs:

Other events are offered which are subsidized from student fees so students pay a much lower rate than they would if they bought tickets directly from local theaters and tour agencies. Last year’s activities included:

  • Walking tours including Black London, Street Art and Harry Potter
  • A sports event
  • Day trips to Stonehenge and Salisbury, Oxford, Bath, Stratford Upon Avon and Brighton
  • River boat cruise along the Thames
  • Theater performances such as Wicked, Matilda, Les Misérables, and The Woman in Black
  • Traditional afternoon tea

Social identity & access

One of the best things you can do before departure is enter into the journey knowing that your time abroad will be unique to this experience. The resources, community, and support available to you when abroad will likely be different as well. In order to help you prepare for your experience, we have compiled many resources about social identity and access in specific locations abroad. Your program staff will also provide you with more details pre-departure and during orientation.
